Why Terry works here

Whilst working at Be One Homes Terry has discovered a home within housing.

“I don’t just like my job – I love it.”

Terry joined Be One Homes with a clear career path in mind.

Terry wanted public sector experience that he could take back to the private sector. However, what he didn’t plan for was discovering a home within social housing.

Why Terry works here:

18 years later, still going strong and enjoying it as much as he did when he first started, Terry tells us what keeps him here.

“It isn’t just the work that keeps me here, but the people too. They aren’t just colleagues, over time people have become friends, and when people leave or move on to different roles the friendship stays.”

“When I was younger, I was lucky to find my dream career by chance when my parents were selling a property, and I feel even luckier to work here. I’ve had the opportunity to develop my career and it’s not many places you get that sort of job satisfaction from working in an office environment.”

Terry's career history:

After obtaining a HND in Construction and the Built Environment in 2005, Terry initially worked in the private sector in various roles including as a Project Engineer and as a Building Surveyor.

He identified a gap in the private sector – they wanted people who could work with councils and housing associations as Building Surveyors but also have an understanding of the private sector.

Terry joined Be One Homes in 2008 with an aim of filling the gap he’d found. He worked as a Building Surveyor until 2019 when he moved to the Care and Repair service becoming a Technical Manager.

Since 2022, he has worked as a Senior Programme Development Manager. He currently leads a team of 23, overseeing the delivery of a programme of works, and deals with technical requirements, Ombudsman queries, as well as liaising regularly with Councillors and MPs on a range of issues.

“I feel a real sense of achievement, I’m quite proud of this service and what my team delivers. A lot of my team share the same passion which is great.”

Although Terry is a Be One Homes employee, the Care and Repair service he works for is commissioned by Bolton Council, so his work doesn’t just cover Be One Homes customers, but also owner occupiers, private tenants and even other housing associations within Bolton.
